its also taking ages to come on when i turn it on and the screen is often messed upand slow and wierd when i use the track pad to move to applications or desktops - it hates me

What version of the iMac? What Mac OS version? Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and post what it says for "Mac OSX Version" and "processor."

when i go into any of my saved documents they are blank, and locked, have tried exporting, duplicating and saving agin, nothing working
