Do i need a mac for using the time machine? Or is an ipad or iphone sufficient?
It is not clear for me if a time machine is useful and useable if there is no mac in the network.
Only an ipad and iphone available.

Time Machine is for Macs, and only runs on them.

Things like iPad get backed up via iCloud and/or iTunes.
If you're talking about a Time Capsule (the square white router containing a hard drive), it will work as a router and a wireless access point, but it will not back up your iOS devices, and cannot share out a printer to them.

Thanks matt. So if i get you right i can install it even without a mac. This in opposition to what CT replied?!
The hard disk i can enter from the ipad and from there i can transfer gb's to the capsule manually?
I was only talking about Time Machine, since, frankly, that is what you asked about.
Time Machine is software that comes installed on Macs and is used to backup the data that is on the computer. A Time Capsule is a wireless router which also has a hard drive. A Time Capsule can be accessed via a wireless network and can be used to store data like any other external hard drive. I don't know of any applications that would allow you to wirelessly access the Time Capsule from an iOS device such as an iPad.
