i have restarted my computer, internet and ipod to try so far. anyone know any other way?

You can only update the current iOS for the 4G which is 6.0.1. Apple does not support updating to an earlier iOS.
What happens when you try to update to iOS 6.0.1?
i get an error message. "there was a problem downloading the software for the ipod "joshua's ipod". the network connection timed out.
when it does that i will watch my internet connection the whole time. i haave full bars with either 3 or 4g internet connection. it will load halfway then pop up with that message ^.
my ios is 4.2 . ever since that update of 4.2 i have never been able to update it 😟 and i have a 32gb 4th gen ipod touch.
been so long my ipod has no coverage from apple.
lllaass - i went for that ios update also but it wont work.
- Make sure yo have iTuines version 10.7 or later on the computer.
- Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall usually resolves that error.
If not try the manual install method included here
alright, i will give it a try and see what happens. btw, when i back up my ipod will it keep everything on it? because i obviously dont have icloud and i got songs, pics and apps i wont be able to get back if it doesn't keep everything.
The backup does not include synced media like apps and music. yo need to have those in your iTunes library. That is discussed here:

Open itunes, connect ipod, click File>Device>Transfer Purchases
i dont have the option of clicking that. my itunes is basically blank when it comes to the tool bar. its got one thing that drops down and it doesn't have that option

when i do the manual install what option am i suppose to choose?
Hey everyone, i need some help with updating my 4th gen ipod's ios from 4.2 to 5.0 . i have tried to update it 100's of times and it will never work. Any idea's?
