Deleting songs from smart playlists

Have created smart playlist using new itunes program and now wish to edit it by deleting certain songs. itunes help instructs me to select song and press delete on keyboard but nothing happens. If I press it in conjunction with shift key, itunes then tells me it will also delete it from my library, which I do not wish to do. Can anyone please help ?
