Intel has received errors from your computer

I just received a phone call from 'Samantha' (with a very thick accent) who said Intel has received error reports from my computer. After she told me to hold down the 'C' key, etc. I told her I had a Mac. I have received these calls before, and that has usually ended the conversation, but this time she transferred me to someone who was a Mac 'specialist'. He instructed me to type www.teamviewer.com. into my url bar, which I did not do, and I told him so.

Has anyone else received these calls? Any info or insight? I suspect they are up to something that could be very hazardous, but I'm also curious.

Thanks.

We have an answering machine on our land line. We allow it to pick up all calls. Those that are "garbage" like the ones you've received ususally hang up when the recording plays. We'll delete the ones that leave a message unless we know who's calling. We use our cell phones as our primary phones and haven't received calls like that yet.

You might want to get in touch with Intel and let them know what calls you've been receiving. All legitimate businesses have departments that deal with scams, phising and other stuff using their name.

You did the right thing by not following their instructions. You should also NEVER click on links in e-mails because that can be just as dangerous. Even the most "official-looking" e-mail can be a scam. Best thing to do is to delete the e-mail without opening it. If you want to pursue whatever the e-mail was offering, try to find the buisness' "official website" and see what you find there.

There are a "gazillion" scams out there with people ready to separate you from your assets. You have to be careful.

Thank you both - I know Apple and Intel don't make calls like these, just wondering if anyone has received these calls and may know what nefarious intentions these people have.

There are a number of scams like this. The most common is to get calls from "Windows Support". Mostly they're trying to sell you services you don't need, though gosh knows what they'd do with any credit card information they receive. Search the web for windows support" scam and you'll find a number of articles about it. Even reporters from Ars Technica have received these fakes:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/10/i-am-calling-you-from-windows-a-tech- support-scammer-dials-ars-technica/

These crooks are quite brazen and unashamed even when told directly that you know what a scam it is. The best, and really only, thing you can do is just hang up on them. There's not much companies such as Intel or Microsoft can do to shut them down.

Regards.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I have contacted Intel and scambusters.com about these calls. I don't have caller I.D. on my home phone, or that would be my first solution. I usually don't wait for the answering machine, either, because often it's my 87 year-old mother. For the last few days there have been several calls where there is nobody there when I pick up - probably these 'Intel' people...

I've gotten calls from some windows support as well, varjak paw, and I laugh...

Would still love to hear from anyone who's received these calls; my friends haven't, but I can't be the only one or their scam is a flop 😁

I have received similar calls from call centers having an Indian accent, about the terrible state of my Windows PC.

One of the reasons I would never have a Windows PC!

If I am in a good mood I just put the phone down.

If I am not... well, the terms and conditions of these forums prevent me from saying what I then do... 👿

LOL, Klaus1! I've set the phone down a few times when these jerks won't take no for an answer. Irritating to get these junk calls if you're incapacitated or expecting IMPORTANT calls, though.

Interestingly, I got this suggestion from a friend: I just went in and googled "what's the team viewer call about" took me right to scam report.

If one of them manages to get through to me my standard answer is he just stepped out I'll go get him. Every time when I pick the phone up in 20 or 30 minutes they are gone. Go figure.

As for if I am wait for a call I don't care who it is they know that first thing. If they don't hang up, I hang up on them. If I am expecting a call my fuse is extremely short.
