iMac: CD or DVD Not Recognized on Desktop

Why is this happening? I would like to burn a dvd from a .dmg file, but can't find the dvd on the desktop.

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Look in Finder, you should see it on the sidepane of a Finder window. You can also tweak the Finder settings to show these on the Desktop by being in Finder - Preferences and then setting what you can and cannot display on the Desktop.

Won't show up in either desktop or finder. Already looked in both. But did find a way to do it. Drag and drop .dmg file to disk utility - highlight it - click on burn - THEN insert blank disc when asked to do so - works great. Apparently you have to insert the disc AFTER the request, not before. Go figure.
