How does the reported Java problems impact the Mac? Mountian Lion has two ways to access Java, via Safari or System Utilities. Should I disable Java or Java Script or both in Safari? The Java Prefernces in the Utilities Folder does not work because I have not downloaded Java SE6 runtime. Should I download it?

To add very slightly to Williams reply - Javascript has nothing to do with Java. You need Javascript enabled to get almost any modern website to work.
You don't need Java except for a few very specific applications or websites.
