It's not a huge loss if it doesn't work, but the people at the apple store were adamant the new iMacs work with a remote. I’ve just spent over £2000 on a new 27”, you’d have thought it would be easy to incorporate?

Apple has been in the process of phasing out the IR remote for the last two years.
I have no idea where the store personel got the idea that it was still being supported.
They are changing over to use an app on the iPhone to do remote control. That has much greater range then Ir remotes ever did.

The remote does work with your new iMac but in a limited way.

Apple has its own remote app simply called Remote.
There are a few Wifi or Bluettooth remote apps that work with both older iMacs with the IR receivers and iMacs without IR.
The best app that I use is called Rowmote Pro.
There is both an iPhone and iPad app. Works great on my late 2009 iMac.
Why don't the new iMacs have an IR receiver?
