iMac Intel - No Volumn

I just got my daughter a used iMac. Downloaded Mountain Lion, upgraded the memory and configured for her but I can't get sound...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Long shot, but...

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

No go..tried the PRAM reset 3 times and also tried re-installing Mountain Lion. The sound worked before I upgraded to Mountain Lion and installed the memory...got to be tied to that.

This is my first MAC in the household so, I am learning everything as I go.
