Multiple emails and IDs in itunes

Having messed up my and my husbands iphones (all data merged and some lost!) because we only have one email and 1 Apple ID, I have now set my husband up with a new email and am about to set him up an Apple ID. Can we use just one itune account or do we need one each?

Using a separate ID for iCloud will stop merging yur contacts but now you have to delete the already merged contacts of each other manually.

  • Delete the iCloud account from his iPhone and choose "Keep on my iPhone" when you promped.
  • Then add an iCloud account with his new Apple ID. Turn ON contacts in iCloud settings and choose merge when you promped.
  • Now you have to clean up your contacts (delete the contacts you don't want) manually from iPhone or from www.icloud.com
  • Then sign out from iMessage and FaceTime settings in his iPhone and sign backin with his ID.
  • Check that he using your ID in Settings>iTunes and App Stores in order to share your purchases.

Many thanks cheonweb - really helpful - and your English is great!!

So are Apps not backed up via icloud? I only ask because when I merged our phones I lost all my Apps and got his? If we download Apps from our phones are you saying we use the original Apple ID or our separate ones (sorry to be thick!)

What's the weather like there? It's snowing here!!

Oh that's great! Thanks again Rick. Do I take it that if we buy Apps in itunes rather than our individual phones that they will copy to each phone? To be honest - I doubt there are any purchased Apps we want to share - but you never know!

Where are Apps backed-up/stored because when I merged the phones I lost all my free ones and have had to download them again - just curious?

Also - where are kept messages backed up/stored? Same thing happened - I lost all mine and got his but I'd like mine back if I can find them!

Turn off one by one the iCloud services. (Contacts, Calendars etc). That way I'm sure you will promped to keep your data in iPhone. Then delete the account.

If you sync through iTunes your apps are in iTunes under the apps tab at the sync page. Install any of them you like

The only way to retrieve your message is to restore your iPhone from the last backup (If you have one). Check it in iTunes preferences>Devices.

When someone downloads an app, the other iPhone download the app automatically if you have the Automatic download On in Settings>iTunes and App Stores. If you don't want this, turn it off and you can still download the app manually and without extra charge.

Make sure that your iPhones have a different name. Settings>General>About>Name. That way you can sync them in the same iTunes without merging your data. (Only for music, apps, photos and books. Don't sync Contacts and Calendars in the same iTunes because they will be merged. Use the iCloud for these data).
