Help with failed reinstallation of iPhoto 11

My first question to the community but struggling with this one.

I have a 15" 2010 Macbook Pro 6,2 with OSX 10.7.5, 8Gb 500Gb and over 100Gb free disk space

My iphoto data file is just over 100Gb in size

I have had an increasing number of "unexpected closures" of iphoto 11 recently - often though not always when uploading an image to facebook.

Having read a number of threads I have reinstalled iphoto from my ilfe 11 disks (I think it was iLife 09 that came with my machine).

I did first delete the receipts in the hidden folder

I have even reinstalled the operating system and I still get the error dump below. All updates have been applied.

iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem

Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

Having read a number of threads I have reinstalled iphoto from my ilfe 11 disks (I think it was iLife 09 that came with my machine).

But it looks like you did not update iPhoto again after reinstalling. Your crash report says "iPhoto 9.1"; that is probably the version directly on your old installation disks. Since then, there have been some important bug fixes for overall stability. What is the last iPhoto version you used with your current iPhoto library? You'll have to update at least to that version. I'd try first to use software update to your update your iPhoto again to a more recent version of iPhoto, and hopefully this will restore the missing framework in your system library. If not, reinstall the operating system again, or try to restore the framework from your backup:

Thanks Leonie but I did not use any original discs from my computer purchase for the reinstallation (i'm not even sure where or if I have any) - I used iLife '11 discs which I purchased & installed some time later. Even these were not fully up to date and when running iphoto for the first time after installation, rather than crashing it required me to download and install an update - which I did. The crash report is subsequent to this.

I do not know why it says Version 9.1 (9.1) - this makes no sense to me at all - my wifes mac air says iphoto '11 is versions 9.4.2 at the info screen inside iphoto (I can't get that far). Hence there does not seem to be correlation between iphoto '11 (year of production) and the version number.

Any more ideas because this has surely got me stumped.

Thanks!

I used iLife '11 discs which I purchased & installed some time later.

The iLIfe '11 disks will have install an early version of iPhoto '11 (version 9.1)

Even these were not fully up to date and when running iphoto for the first time after installation, rather than crashing it required me to download and install an update - which I did.

The update shoud have installed 9.4.2, th most current version.

I do not know why it says Version 9.1 (9.1) - this makes no sense to me at all -

This can happen, if you have two versions of the program installed and your Dock icon is bound to the older version.

Ctrl-click the Dock icon of iPhoto and select "Options > Show in Finder". Is the iPhoto version, that is reveald, located in your "Applications" folder? And what version of iPhoto is shown below the application icon?

Also, type "iPhoto" into the Spotlight search field in the upper right corner of the screen. Does Spotlight find more than one iPhoto version?

Jan 18, 2013 9:27 PM in response to léonie

Hi Leonie,

I found that I did not have two versions installed (which is what I would have expected as I had done a "thorough" cleansing process before the re-install having read previous threads). Only version 9.1

Not sure why the following worked but it did.

I found my original discs that came with my computer

  • Installed Version 8.1.1
  • Used my iLife 11 disc to update to version 9.0
  • software update then allowed me to do 2 sequential updates, first to 9.1 and then (finally) to 9.4.2 (This last step wasn't coming up in my software updates before)

Anyway - its all working now.

Now to see if this fixed the crashes that used to occur...

Thanks for your help!

There are quite a few discussions with similar crashes related to iPhoto 9.4.1 and Facebook recently, and I have not seen a "solved" for any of them.

Can you access your Facebook albums, when you switch to a different iPhoto library or when you work from a different user account?

Please post also the part of the crash log that shows the Crashed thread 25.

You said, you reinstalled Mac OS X 10.7.5; did you reinstall any third party software after you reinstalled Lion?

Jan 19, 2013 12:56 AM in response to léonie

I've only got one library and one user account on this machine so can't really test that readily.

I can create them if the following doesn't help.

Using other apps (safari) or other devices (ipad/iphone) the albums are all still online of course.

The only software that's been reinstalled is the OS and iphoto whilst I try to rouble shoot this.

Thanks once again - not sure what you make of this...

Thanks once again - not sure what you make of this...

That are fundamental services of the OS that should not be crashing, but I see no clue what is causing these to crash. They must be called with illegal data.

The tests I suggested will help to decide,

  • if there is a corruption in your iPhoto library that is causing the crash (testing with a new library)
  • or if some settings/start up items in your user account are faulty (testing from a different account). If you create a new account for testing, keep the default setting for this test to be conclusive.

Does iPhoto work well, if you do not access FB?

Have you tried to sign out of your FB account before rebuilding the Library?

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)

Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000010

This kind of error is frequently a data error. Maybe one of the photos you are using cannot be processed. When does the crash occur? When you are trying to upload photos, or when you are reading the facebook albums?

If it is happening, when uploading, try to upload an older photo, that you successfully could upload previously. Is that still possible?

I do not use Facebook and Mac OS X 10.7.5. So I cannot help much with that part of your problem. I hope somebody will chime in, who actually is using Facebook on Mac OS X 10.7.5..

If you rebuilding efforts with iPhoto fail try this:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Sorry for the delay.

I spent the $30 and downloaded iPhoto Library Manager

Unfortunately after about 3 - 4 hours it froze 2/3 of the way through doing a library rebuild.

Its well into the evening here in Australia now so I may not have a chance to look at it again until after work tomorrow.

I will report back and thanks both of you for your suggestions so far...
