WiFi - Problems during Set Up

It is clear that I do not understand much of the technical jargon used in the troubleshooting tips.

My wireless router settings are:

Make: CONCEPTRONIC C54BRS4A

LAN: IP address: 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

DHCP Server: Enabled

Start IP Address: 192.168.0.100

End IP Address: 192.168.0.199

WAN: Name: HOME NETWORK

Connection type: DHCP

Status: Connected

IP Address: 198.162.5.122

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.5.1

DNS1: 80.81.117.6

DNS2: 213.172.50.29

Wireless 802.11g: Mode: (g/b)

Channel: 6

Encryption: Disabled

SSID Broadcast: Enabled

The wireless network works throughout my home and is used by several PCs and several Logitech Squeezebox Radios. The signal strength indicated on the IPAD is strong, but yet I am not able to connect. Since Set Up has not been completed, I am unable to follow many of the troubleshooting tips.

It is extremely frustrating that straight out of the box there are problems and no convenient manual to resolve them.

I would do one of two things.

1. Restart the iPad and power cycle your router. You will have to start from the beginning with the iPad but maybe it will recognize your network and let you connect after you restart both devices.

2. Or connect to iTunes on your computer, activate the device that way and then work on the WiFi connection issue.

I am finding it very difficult and confusing navigating my way around the fora and apologise if I have already sent you 2 answers to your comments.

Thank you for your reply.

Ref Para 1) I eventually found out how to switch the IPAD Off / On ~ no instructions provided how to do this and it was On out of the box. I have switched the IPAD on and off a number of times and have rebooted the router, all to no avail. IPAD sees the network (HOME NETWORK) but refuses to connect. The signal strength is excellent as I have the IPAD less than 12" away from the router. For 1 small instant I got a tick beside HOME NETWORK, but there were no further steps I could take. Next tab would not activate.

Ref Para 2) Have connected it to the PC. It was recognised by the PC as a USB device. Apart from inviting me to test the camera, I could do nothing else. Please explain to me how and why I have to connect to iTunes or activate my IPAD? Without a WiFi connection the IPAD is useless, since I am unable to complete the Set Up procedure. A very expensive and useless collection of electronic parts.

I have to say after 6 hours of trying to set up the infernal machine and all the support advice and blogs assumes that set-up has been completed and are therefore proving to be no use at all, the satisfaction level with this new, shiny and exceedingly expensive device is at an all time low.

Regards

Some things to try first:

1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

• Launch Settings app

• Tap on Wi-Fi

• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to apologize to me for anything.

I must say, that I find it a little bit troubling that the iPad was turned on out-of-the-box. In order for me to turn on my device, I actually have to hold the power button down for a few seconds before the Apple logo appears on the screen before the device powers up. In any event the device should not have been turned on already coming out of the box.

Perhaps you would be better off taking your iPad to an Apple store now and letting an Apple genius activate the device for you. If that is not a convenient thing for you to do you could try activating your iPad anywhere where you can get a Wi-Fi connection. Perhaps you live closer to a Starbucks or a library or anywhere that you can connect to free Internet service. You may have better luck with another Wi-Fi network. Once you get the iPad activated then you can go home and troubleshoot whatever Wi-Fi problems you're having at your house.

With regard to activating via iTunes it was just a suggestion. Using iTunes is still a viable way of activating the device and while the iPad can be a PC free device, sometimes relying on iTunes is the way to go. I realize that Apple sells the iPad now as a PC free device, but for me, using iTunes is still part of my routine with my iPad. But in your case, it sounds as though the iPad is not being recognized in iTunes, which presents another problem for you. If you are not running the latest version of iTunes, iTunes 11, you may want to consider downloading and installing it and then trying to activate again using iTunes. You can download iTunes here if you care to give that a try.

I am truly sorry you are experiencing these problems with the new device, because once the iPad is up and running it really is quite a useful and amazing device.
