ipod sleep/wake button is difficult to activate

The sleep/wake button is getting harder and harder to activate and the screen does not light up completely. Other than that, everything seems to be working, but it is difficult to wake it up. I really have to push down on it really hard to activate it. I don't want to have to send it in for service, but I am afraid that I will. Does anyone have any suggestions?😢
