Unarchiver 3.6.1 unable to extract rar files

I've been trying this for two weeks now after getting notice of an update to The Unarchiver which comes with Mac OS X. I am running OS X10. 8.2 which is current. The update installs without error but when I try to extract several .rar files, I get an error to the effect that it can't extract to a folder. I've tried this about 8 times, same experience. When it fails, I restore Unarchiver 3.5.1 from backup and extract rar files with it and it works fine. 3.6.1 says it is fixing an folder extract error when in fact it causes one where there was none in the first place. I would just as soon as forget about 3.6.1 but I don't know how to permanently get rid of it. When I restore from backup to 3.5.1, then it puts 3.6.1 back in the update que. Does anyone know how to fix the problem I'm having with 3.6.1 and if not, how do I get rid of it coming back to the update que? Thanks.

Download StuffitExpander as a free alternative.

StuffitExpander is not exactly free. You are required to buy one of their other software packages (or StuffitExpader itself) in order to get it. Thanks anyway. I'd really like to know why Archiver 3.6.1 which is supposed to fix a bug extracting files actually won't extract rar files (maybe more but rar is all I deal with). 3.5.1 works flawlessly in extraction which makes it even more curious since 3.6.1 is fixing a problem that doesn't exist but actually causes the problem. Is this some kind of joke. Has anyone else upgrade Unarchiver to 3.6.1? While it is included with the Apple OS it is actually provided by someone named Green. Da Green, I think.

ArchiveUtility is the default built in decompression software. Right click on your package and "open with."

Your Unarchiver I am not familiar with.

An alternative is to download the free Stuffit Expander for itunes.
