help!

I am getting the spinning beach ball very shortly after working with any application. Left long enough it resolves, but begins again shortly. Had a recent crash which Apple helped me with over the phone. Any ideas?

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Jan 18, 2013 11:05 PM in response to BDAqua

Disk Utility says disk "appears to be OK" after running repair disk. Repair permissions also performed. % of CPU usage appears normal (some apps obviously use more- Firefox at 17.3; Bittorrent at 10.1 currently). I have 8GB DDR Mem installed so that isn't a problem. Currently all open apps seem to be using about 1GB of "Real Memory". As far as Console goes I don't really know what I am reading: for instance: "

1/18/13 9:12:13.963 PM InterCheck[3206]: SXLC: Setting [key:SXLDNSIP1] [value:192.xxx.0.1] repeats over and over for awhile, then "

1/18/13 9:12:14.806 PM mds[76]: Unable to talk to lsboxd"; then repeats some more and quits and then later; "

1/18/13 10:00:37.000 PM kernel[0]: PM notification cancel (pid 375, DGAgent)" but I haven't a clue to what this is saying. Sounds ominous to me! 🙂
It's just getting very frustrating and the machine has worked perfectly until this last crash. Still don't know what caused it. Thinking about a clean install but would lose all my added apps and have to hope I can locate all the registration keys.
Oh, and "0 bytes (0 bytes/sec)" in memory tab of activity monitor for 'pageouts'.

Jan 19, 2013 12:14 AM in response to gregen9

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/private/var/run/StartupItems

/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons

/Library/LaunchDaemons

Some of this will be repetition.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.

A common cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.

Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.

Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.

Step 1

Launch the Activity Monitor application.

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

Step 2

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message. You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Feb 9, 2013 3:00 PM in response to Linc Davis

Sorry Linc not to have replied earlier but I've been busy recreating my lost iTunes Library. So... the hangs still happen everytime I use the computer, but I guess I've just been working around them- taking a break until they resolve. Here's the info you requested though when I started compiling it no hangs were occurring so I went back in Console and guessed where the last hang might have occurred. Then while I was copying data a hang occurred so I'll put the last bit of info in too. Trying to make it not "too much' (thousands of line). Thanks for your interest.

Something I haven't mentioned which seems related: in an (any) open Finder window the selection buttons at the top- left to right: 'show items as icons, in a list etc. I have 4 connected buttons then a ? mark then the buttons continue the next being 'change the item arrangement'. The ? mark indicates something was once there that is now gone doesn't it?

Feb 9, 2013 3:09 PM in response to gregen9

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. It's slow, but you should not get beachballs. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Feb 10, 2013 9:22 PM in response to Linc Davis

I did as you asked Linc and I worked about 5min. in the guest account before the first hang. I am still in safe mode but again as I opened several .apps I got my first hang as i opened text edit. I have never enabled file vault and literally don't know what 'find my Mac' is- but I did buy the machine slightly used about a year and a half ago from a guy who set it up for a family PC user who just couldn't make the switch (!?). Following some lines from console as I started up in safe mode.
