epson scanner with OS 10.8

Finally upgraded to OS 10.8.2 from 10.6.8. Epson Expression 1640XL worked fine before, software was supposedly compatible. Not so. Image Capture does not control scanner either, even tho' that is what Epson say to use. Any suggestions on how to get the Mac OS to drive the scanner? The MacPro sees it and can start it, but it does not finish a preview scan. Yes, there are other packages to buy and Hanrick's works (the scanner and connection are fine) but who wants to buy more software?

I have a different Epson printer, also supported by Apple. I do not use Image Capture for scanning, but instead do it this way. I hope this helps you!

Open System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu), and click "Print & Scan". Hopefully you see your Epson 1640XL there on the left. Click on that. Do you see a "Scan" tab on the top right? That's the answer if you see it there! All the functions are there.

Going into System Preferences gives you choices - see the screenshot from mine:

Note the choices next to the scan button (Image Capture is always a choice).

And, once you have the scan window open, there should be a bouncing icon in your dock. If you want to have shortcut for that, simply control click on the icon and choose "keep in dock".

Thanks, as always for the assistance. I had previously tried everything everyone has suggested and the Mac OS 10.8 will not fully control the scanner, Expression 1640XL. It sees it, in either the printer/scanner pane, or in IC or Preview, and it will start an 'overview', but not finish it or let me save anything.

The Epson printer I have still works fine, but is a newer vintage.

I have the same scanner, and have found that the only application that works is the EPSON Scan application software. Have you tried installing the EPSON Scan application version 2.73 software? Then try software updates under the apple menu to update your EPSON drivers to current status. I'm on 10.6, but have never been able to get image capture to ever work with my 1640. My Expression 1640XL is an older one. I tried the EPSON Scan 3.8.0, it was a deadend. I unistalled 3.8.0, and reinstalled 2.73. Then did the software update on my mac, My scanner came back!

Thanks for replying. I gave up on anything Epson for the scanner. They point the finger to Apple and vice versa. Bottom line is that they gave up on supplying software with 10.8 and the older versions will not install. So I bought VueScan. It works although has some control problems and getting tech support is difficult. It seems to particularly have difficulty with the batch slide scanning mode, but it works.
