Your iPhone must of somehow got wet. What I done to fix this problem is to put the iPhone in a ziplock bag along with those stay dry DIAPER. The diaper has chemicals that can extract any moisture from the inside of your iPhone. Hope that works for you.
I dropped my iPhone 4S into about an inch of beer in a pint glass. Dang it!! The phone was then stuck in dock connector mode and I tried everything I could on the internet to address it. Even kept the phone in a zip lock bag of rice for a couple of day to try and dry it out. Nothing worked.
Finally, I went to Radio Shack and bought some aerosol electronics cleaner and dust remover spray. I sprayed the electronics cleaner into the dock connector opening and scrubbed with a clean toothbrush. I flushed out the cleaner with the air spray and repeated the process. After my final air spray to dry out the connector, I let it set for a few hours, When I turned it back on, viola, my phone is back to normal.
I hope this experience helps out someone as desperate as I was to find a solution. Good luck out there.
I tried everything and only found that the symptom did comes and gone by itself. Only way I could fix it right away is to plug it in the last dock connector (the suspect is my Panasonic stereo), but it works temporarily. New trick I've just found is changing the language setting back and forth.
This happened to my phone a couple of times too. The last time it happened, I was connected to my bluetooth stereo i my car earlier in the day. I turned off bluetooth on my phone, and it fixed the problem. Dock connector mode went awa and the volume buttons worked again.
