Why do icons of files/folders not show up in a folder listing?

Icons of files/folders are not showing up in a folder listing of a website. I understand that these icons are located at /usr/share/httpd/icons/. When I take a look at the location of one of the broken images, I notice that they are supposed to be located at http://www.mydomain.com/icons/<name of icon>.gif.

Does that mean that I have to copy the icons folder from the apache directory to the root directory of the website, or make a symbolic link, or is there something that I have to add to /private/etc/apache2/httpd.config, or something else?

Apache is designed to avoid allowing random remote folks from wandering around in random locations within your file system. Put another way, yes, you want to locate the icons where Apache is permitted to access them. With OS X, there's a helpful file system alias provided from the Icons folkder over to the /usr/share/httpd/icons/ folder that you're looking at. Here's a related OS X client write-up (including protection-related details), and the icons alias itself can be more directly managed on OS X Server than on the OS X clients discussed in that write-up; see page 44 in the Web Services manual for some related details.
