error message on ipod

HI, My ipod is giving me an error message and shutting itself off or just freezing for awhile now. Today the only thing that will show on screen is a picture of the ipod with an exclamation point in a triangle and the www.apple.com/support/ipod message..

we have tried the holding the button to reset and my son has cleared the entire thing and reloaded..nothing works..

any help would be wonderful..

should I send it in for repair?
