If I have a second generation touch, is it compatible with the latest iTunes?

Okay ~ let me start by saying I am NO iPod expert, or anything even close 🙂. I have figured out I have a second generation touch that I haven't used in years. My son now wants to start listneing to music so I thought I would give him my iPod. I downloaded the latest iTunes on the lap top but it won't recognize the iPod. I have a brand new cable. So, a couple of questions:

Is it possible my cable is charging only and not a sync cable?

Is my second generation iPod just too old now?

Any helo anyone can offer would be appreciated! I've been troubleshooting and resetting and following online directions for days. I'm ready to throw it out the window and buy somethng new.

Thanks, in advance!
