Can not connect to server via server.name.private

I am using a linksys E3000 router and iMac running Mountain Lion Server.

I can connect from the local network using the IP address but can not connect using the "server.name.private"

The router is controlling the DNS , I do not have DNS turned on in the server. I have reserved the IP address with the router so it is constant.

Can anyone help?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
