Using Stealthplug with headphones plugged in my mac doesn't work

When using Stealthplug with headphones plugged into my Mac there is 2 second audio delay between playing my guitar and hearing the notes in Garageband. When I unplug the headphones the delay is still there and I have to restart the program - any ideas?

GarageBand '08, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
