Can I move photos and video from iPhone to the desktop?

Is it possible to have the iPhone show up as a drive so that I can manually move photos and video shot with the phone to my desktop? I don't like the fact that I always have to go through iPhoto, or in my case, Aperture and/or iMovie. I don't like to store video in Aperture and I don't always want to keep the video footage as files in iMovie. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this, so if not, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to save and archive video footage onto the computer from the iPhone?
