iMovie continually quits

While I'm importing video from a vcr. IM 11, 9.0.8 version. IM quits quite often. When I click the final import button is when it quits. I have to do a force quit to get it running again. I've successfully imported much video, but all the quitting is such a pain. And after a force quit, the latest clips dragged into the project window are no longer there. I have to redo that over again. Any thoughts to what's going on here?
