Q: problem gifting an app

Here's what happened.  I purchased Cribbage HD for myself using my ipad and my itunes account.  I gifted another purchase of that app to my husband.  He opened his mail from that same ipad and hit the redeem button so it started to download on the ipad again.  he should have opened his mail from his own phone so the app would download to his phone, but it was a mistake.  I feel I paid twice for the app as it downloaded twice on the ipad but i only have one app.  my husband never got the app!  Help!
