LaCie Rugged 1TB freezes in OS X and other issues
Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2012)
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
OS X 10.8.2 (12C3006)
I purchased a LaCie Rugged 1TB portable drive today that supports thunderbolt and USB 3.0. I performed the initial formating of the drive in parallels virtualized Windows 7 with the entire drive being shared for both OS X and Windows usage. In both operating systems, if I try to access the default software folders that are on the drive from the manufacturer, (LaCie Setup and Private-Public) the system hangs and requires a hard boot. OS X timestamp just shows the time hung from the moment I clicked on a folder. This has happened after restarts, power-offs on all ports for both USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt.
When it is functional, the date transfer speeds are extremely slow (I was notified during formating that a shared format would mean the maximum speed for transfers would be 4TB/sec) but moving a 29.34GB iPhoto library in OS X to the drive did the following transfer metrics:
2 minutes into the transfer only 199.2MB was transfered
6 minutes into the transfer 11.78GB was transfered
11 minutes into the transfer 26.99GB was transfered
14 minutes 28 seconds into the transfer 29.34GB was transfered (completed)
This is 33.8 MB/sec average.

Does anyone have any idea if there is a software problem, or other problem? I think I'll have to return the drive and / or have the macbook looked at because something appears to be wrong.
