how do you control software instruments with an external keyboard

Newbie Q,

How do you get the installed midi keyboard, (external) to trigger the software instruments? The tutorial is surprisingly unhelpful for a non- midi user!!

I'll try the FAQ & forums archives too.

How did you get the m-audio USB keyrig 49 to work with Mountain Lion? I cant get it working and have tried to use thier update but no joy.
