How do I record my voice in GarageBand?

How do I record my voice in GarageBand on an iMac? I have tried following the instruction from the "help" section and have not been successful.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

I figured it out and got it to work with the built-in iMac mic. I think the external mics I am using need a pre amp.
