Copy contacts from iPhone to iMac

The trouble is, "sync" does not tell us which direction the data are copied. I mostly update contacts on my iPhone, and I want that data set copied to my iMac (or changes added to the existing set there). I just cannot find a way to do that reliably.

Using the Cloud is no help, it just makes it more complicated, and anyway I'm still on Snow Leopard on the iMac.

Help!

I mean, not everyone will have been synching to/from their computer from day1. I switched that off after I got 2 copies of every contact at one point, I have no idea why. So, suppose one hasn't?

However - I had the iPhone set up to synch contacts with iCloud, and after I switched that off the iPhone contacts did copy into my iMac. But t is quite stressful because one can't tell exactly what is going to happen when you click the button. I wonder if I switch the iCloud synch back on, will I get duplicates again? (However, I could back up the iPhone first onto the computer, Restore if necessary works fine, I will give it that.)

Perhaps you would agree that having to look at the manual is a sign of a non-intuitive interface? I can think of so many improvements.
