FaceTime - issues recieving call

Hi. My mother is in Canada and I'm in Ireland and we can both log into facetime and call eachother but neither of us are able to recieve the incoming call (we can't see that a call is coming). We both have Macs and the correct versions of OS and are connected to WiFi. Can anyone suggest any reason we aren't able to connect?
