I recently installed Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and my machine is slow and the colour wheel is a constant addition. I had no issues prior to downloading this update. Any advice?

Lion is a hungry beast...Would suggest that you Increase your RAM to Maximum for your computer...

It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
For best performance, fill all memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.
