it wasn't there when i was deleting my messages but it was there..
its confusing me and it also bugs me.
between the email that i'm viewing and the inbox, there's two inches of gray space.
anyone know how to fix this?

You're running Leopard, so I can't remember if it worked this way or not...but I think it did:
Move your cursor to the line separating your inbox and the email preview. It will change shape when you're directly on top of the line. Left click and hold your mouse, then drag to resize the pane.
