what is the best program to stop the chimes sound on mac startup

Does anyone know or is using a program to stop the chimes sound on my mac I am running 10.6.8 intel for mac desktop? I want to make sure i don't get something that makes something else not work right when I do this to my mac. The start up chimes is really loud and turning down the sound in prefences is just not enough.
