From Help:

To select multiple items that are next to each other:

  • Click the first item, and then press the Shift key and click the last item. All items in between are included in the selection.

This does not work for me, has never worked. A current project makes this not-working a real pain.

Mac OS X Version 10.6.8

But I've had multiple OS's over the years, and multiple devices.

I'm stumped.

Thank you. I don't want to select all, which I do know how to do. It never occurred to me to change to list view. Such a major help this was!

That doesn't work in icon view; instead, press the Command and A keys, or click on an empty area and drag and enclose those items.
