Can I upgrade directly from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard?

People at the Apple store in my town said I had to upgrade to Leopard first but they don't have the disk in stores or online anymore. I have see on the forums that you can just install Snow Leopard and it'll run all right. Is this true? Despite this, the people at Apple store won't let me purchase it...
