When ever I put my Iphone on the left side of the (Pad?) my laptop goes to sleep, sometimes does come back on until I change the position of the phone. Can anyone explain this?

there's a magnet in the phone which is hitting the magnetic switch for the macbook pro

Sleep function in the MBP is triggered by magnets placed in the lid.
There is an advisory from Apple against stacking portable computers to prevent this.

Just keep gadgets that have magnets away from the computer.

You asked it to sleep by simulating closing the lid. It slept. It's working fine.
What is there to worry about? Now you understand why it did it.
