upgrade itouch 2g to latest firmware

I have an ipod touch second generation and wanted to know if its possible to upgrade to the 5.0 firmware? I still have 4.1.2 and tried to upgrade via itunes but got an error.

The 2nd generation iPod Touch can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

My kids wanted to download sum games but it would not allow them due to the old firmware. So basically I have to get another ipod touch 3/4G?

If you need/want Apps that require iOS 4.3 or higher, then yes you will need a new device.
