is there a way not to bring all the different windows of an app to the front when you select one of them?

When I have multiple pdf files open and want to look at one by selecting it from mission control it brings all of the pdf files to the foreground. So if I was in finder and wanted to see a pdf file I would swipe to mission control and select the desired file but upon closing the window I would see the next pdf file instead of the finder window that was originally up. Is there a way to only bring the one I selected in front of the finder window so that when i close the pdf file i can quickly go back to finder?
