Q: Upgrading RAM on Imac - can you use mismatched pairs?

A 27" mid '10 iMac comes with 2 slots of 2 gbs of memory filled, (4Gb) and 2 left open.

Can I buy a 8gb kit and have 12 gb?

Or does all the RAM have to match?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Mid 2010

You can put in any combination you want to.  But performance is maximized if each pair is matched.  Your intended setup 2x2GB + 2x4GB for a total of 12GB will be fine ... each pair is matched.
