hidden files in the item chooser

Using terminal, I got hidden files to show in a Finder window.

Now, how do I get them to show in the Chooser window? Hopefully, the right name for the window, not all that conversant with Apple terminology.

Not a bit of it. There are lots of hidden tricks that you'll not find in the help viewer on a Mac. They I think are omitted by design.

It's almost like they want you to have fun finding them.

I don't think either Apple or MS want you to actually know how to use the computer anymore. Plus, the amount of time needed to do good documentation would cut into their bottom line.

Hah! They don't want you, the uninitiated and unlearned user, to muck things up by customizing what they think is the perfect design (or Mommy Apple knows best). That's why they hid the user's Library folder. They spent too much support time fixing things when users bolloxed their machines by deleting something useful. Next will be the root-level /Library and /System folders, making their computers just like their other iOS device, locking everyone out.

Agreed. MS has done this for years, hiding thing. But at least they make it easier to unhide, as that option is in the basic folder view configuration settings for those that want to tweak and customize their computers. How to show the hidden files is clearly offered. IMO, MS is the better system in this instance.

This type of hiding that Apple appears to do is one of the things that seems to really hit sore points with the Windows power users I see.

For newcomers. see these:

Common OS X Keyboard Shortcuts

System Preferences->Keyboard->Keyboard Shortcuts (allows adding and changing current default ones)

Safari Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts (requires enabling the Debug menu)

Secrets (download and install the prefPane)

Those should get you and the OP started with doing useful things.

That keyboard shortcuts list is one thing I've been looking for, and something that should be in the Mac Help files. All in one spot, not scattered here and there.

Whoever, in the past, that thought online help was better than a well written manual needs some kind of remedial training.

Free (for now) it has many of the features that you would like to see in Finder but don't (INCLUDING an option to hide or show hidden files lickitty split..

So does TinkerTool, my favorite. I created an AppleScript app, put it on the Dock, that shows/ and hides hiddens with a single click.

I use this AppleScript, saved as an app, and put on the Dock. Single-click toggles it.

try

do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles"

on error

do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"

end try

if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is equal to "0" then

do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"

else

do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"

end if

do shell script "killall Finder"

Thank you to both of you (Frank Caggiano and baltwo)! I've actually combined your scripts to make a service, then I assigned a shortcut to it and it works really nice. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to do the same thing for "Show Package Contents" (10.9 OS X). This is not really the same issue but still has to do with Finder not showing the content of the directory. For example if you go to Pictures and click (highlight) "iPhoto Library" you won't see any content no matter what the setting for hidden files is. However, if you go to the same place through the terminal you'll see all that iPhoto uses to handle its imports (as not hidden). Finder can show this if you select "Show Package Contents" which is offered in right click menu.
