I had money on my account, but when I purchased some songs on itunes, it went directly to my credit card. Why didn't my balance show up on the top of the screen and why was I not informed that my credit card was being charged?

I purchased some songs on itunes last night. Even though I had money on my account, my credit card was charged. I am not quite sure as to why if my credit card was charge, I was not notified. Also, if money ran low on my account, why it switched directly to my credit card and I was not notified. If anyone could answer, it would be greatly appreciated.
