I'm going to try and get you more help. My experience with Lion is limited. I haven't had it very long.

Try booting into Safe Mode,  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, try the preferences there and then reboot normally.  Any improvement?

    Hi Dale

I hope its ok to call you Dale because you have been very helpfull with me problem.

Ive been working till late so not had time to try any thing else. My own feeling is that im going to try restoring the whole system to a earlier  date from my time machine after making an ordinary copy of my files in the hope this will sort it. I can then time machine again to btain any specific files i need

All the tips of your I tried but not works is not your fault. Its difficult to diagnose at distance (especially thousands of miles like this).

I will come back to you once i have given it a spin.

    Thanks

    HI Dale

I have reinstalled from a date just before it seemed to go wrong. Its back working but now im time machining to get my original file back in order.

For reference - while trying to copy an ordinary copy onto a hard drive ( not time machine compressed) it constantly said that parts of the Iphoto file could not be copied due to a data fault (coruption maybe) . I had to copy the file without the Iphoto lib file. It seems that the initial problem was to do with the Iphoto Lib file.

    Your help helped me.

    Thanx

    Steve P
