Q: How to get iMac to find wireless mouse?

I am in the Welcome page of a new install. I have a Bluetooth mouse. How do I get the iMac to discover the wireless mouse when I can't get to systems preferences?

Apple Mail, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iMac

The mouse should be automatically found by the system.

Thanks, but it doesn't go into discovery mode (I guess). Anyway, no joy ....

If I had a wired mouse, I know I could get this done, but I don't.
