Constant rainbow wheel and freezing issues

Hello everyone,

I have done a lot of reading online about this issue, and I've called Apple a while back, but the issue has returned.

Firstly, I'm on a MacBook Pro 13" from Mid 2010. It's got 4GB of memory, and 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I've still got over 200GB avaliable on the hard drive. I'm also running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

Basically these are my main issues:

  • Constant rainbow wheel occurs, probably once every few minutes or less of normal working
    • Sometimes happens just randomly
    • Sometimes occurs when I click a new application, new window, spotlight.. basically any clicks
    • Lasts from a few seconds to much longer, but generally the computer doesn't fully lock up
  • iTunes music will pause for periods of time, totally just cuts out.. then resumes after a random amount of time
  • Videos will pause during playback for random amounts of time - both streaming video and downloaded content
  • Overall slow response time no matter what I'm doing

I have a memory monitor on, and this all occurs when there is still over at least 1.5GB of memory. I've tried resetting the PRam (?) multiple times, and it used to seem to make my computer run more smoothly, but it no longer seems to rectify the issues. I've also went into the Disk Utility and checked permissions and ran the disk repair and everything..

I'm not sure what else to try, so any help would be MUCH appreciated. I'm in university and this constant freezing is not condusive to my learning haha. My computer even froze up once while typing this post!

Thanks so much in advance.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.

A common cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.

Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.

Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.

Step 1

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

Step 2

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message. You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Thanks for the help!!

For my CPU Stats:

Highest process is the Activity Monitor, followed by Google Chrome (5.5%, around 200MB real memory)

User: 3.4%

System: 6%

Idle: 90%

(These numbers fluctuate while looking at them which I'm sure is normal)

System memory:

Page ins: 842MB

Page outs: 0

Swap: 0

(I swear the last two numbers were bigger before..)

Both reads in/sec and out are 0 right now as well.

Also I see the "cleanmymac" in these logs and I was told not to use it so I'm not sure why it's popping up. I've deleted it now..

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.

Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
