iDevices on windows 8 not working?

I just upgraded to windows 8 on my laptop. While I am generally happy with it, iTunes is not working the way I want it. Specifically, when I plug in my iPad or iPhone 4S, the computer itself will register it (it beeps and starts to charge) but iTunes won't pick it up. It's not in any device list. I have tried a few 'fixes' but nothing has worked. Is this just me, or is this a common problem caused by windows 8 compatability, that should hopefully be fixed by an upcoming iTunes update?
