Hi I have an iPhone 4s which wont switch on . I went to apple and they said it needed a new battery. However to do this they must restore the phone. I have important pics and data on the phone that I want to recover. I was unable to back up my phone before it died. Is there anyway to retrieve this data. I am able to get the phone into dfu mode

Find a third-party repair shop to replace the battery...this will void all warranty/support, but your data will be intact. Apple, for security reasons, erases all devices when serviced like this.

If you backup to cloud, this method will help you.

The difficulty in restoring iCloud data from a back up is that the back up is older than the current version on iCloud and anything that is restored gets removed again when an iCloud sync occurs.

    1. Ensure the device is connected to your local network.

    2. Start the restore from iCloud back up.

    3. Allow the devices settings to restore (watch for the confirmation of completion).

    4. As the apps begin to restore pull the connection to your router WAN port (the one that goes to the telephone point).

    5. Wait for the time out confirmation.

    6. Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn off contact syncing (keep contacts when prompted).

Reconnect the router to the internet and let the restore process complete.

    7. Delete any iCloud contacts from iCloud.com on a computer.

Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn on contact syncing (merge contacts when prompted).

I had the same problem today when I reset my computer system. I found a program called iPhone Data Recovery for Mac that seemed to have helped. And it was free. .U can find it here on the CNET site:

Do not restore with iTunes again. After that, you may check your iTunes backup first. If there is more than one backup available, you can select a previous backup. If you can find the right backup, you can recover lost data from iPhone backup.

If you have iTunes backup data, you can plug your iphone to computer and get your deleted pics from iTunes. While, if you do not have any backup files, you need third party iPhone 4s data recovery tool thus can recover your lost data.

As long as you don’t disable the automatic sync option in iTunes, it will automatically generate a backup for your iOS device when you plug your device into your Mac or PC, and the backup file updates along with your every sync. So it is certainly sure and easy to restore lost data of iPhone from iTunes backup with iPhone data recovery. That is, you can recover your iPhone/iPad/iPod data from the recent iTunes backup whenever the data is missing.

Or, in other way, you can recover from an old backup, but it will recover everything in that backup; there's no way to selectively recover from a backup. Which is a good reason to back up daily.

If you back up to your computer connect the phone to your computer, right click on it in iTunes, and choose "restore from backup". If you back up to iCloud go to Settings/General/Reset - Erase All Content and Settings. You will then be asked if you want to restore from the iCloud backup.

Hope it can help you a lot!

Many people might encounter iPhone data lost issues, for example, if you deleted your text messages of your device by accident, you won't be worried, you can have a try of the following tips:

If the messages exist in the backup, then they can definitely be recovered. Now there are 3 things you can do retrieve deleted text messages from iPhone:-

1 - Go to Apple Genius bar and see if they can help

2 - Restore from the backup:- This will get you all the messages you want, but will wipe out everything that came into your phone since the backup date

3 - Get a backup recovery software:- I have used iPhone data recovery software and would definitely recommend it. There are other options though, like the one Daiya has suggested, but they are just too expensive. It does the exact same thing for much less.
