Question

New Macally Firewire enclosure troubles....

I just bought a new Macally PHR-100AF enclosure for a new hard drive I had sitting around. When I boot up my Mac Mini and try to connect the external drive, the Mini crashes. If I power up the drive before I boot up, it seems to be OK. Anyone else have this problem and/or know how to fix it?

I am running a 1.5 Ghz Mac Mini with 512 MB RAM. The Macally case is the only thing I have plugged into the Firewire chain.

Hi, did you set the jumpers of your drive to "Master" ? Check out the different jumpers setting on your Hard Drive's brand Website. Most of the time, in those Macally PHR-100..., you've got to set the jumper to "Master" or "Single" (as listed in the PHR installation guide).

you may have another problem certain hard drive inclosures have problems with power consumption so if you do not have enough power running the drive cable i.e using a usb hub you may run into a major problem

i would recommend the mini pac hard drive system all compusa stores sell them they are 199.99 but what is nice is it has a firewire and usb hub built into it

I concur with Niclet. I have two macally enclosures almost identical (they are quiet, reliable). Your version seems to be only Firewire.
Where did the hard drive come from? Did you check to make sure the drive is Master and not Slave??? I currently have 4 external drives connected to my mini and they all work flawlessly.
I haven't tried it but I guess someone would 'try' to run the external without the DC external Power supply (that's not you is it?).
After you get it up and running did you run the disk utility (repair) on it?

Thanks, everyone....

I contacted Macally and they had me ship the enclosure back to them for a new one. I am guessing it had to do with the power supply. I think I remember reading about a batch of their enclosures having bad power supply's.

I havent switched my drive setting from when I had it in my old iMac - so I am assuming it is set to Master. I'll have to check that too. It's a Maxtor, so I'll check their website.....
