I use an external target (a volume of a NAS) for Time Machine to backup my data. However, I see that backup is using 50GB+ from my built-in SSD - and I am not happy with this. Why? How could I fix this? I did not change any of my previous settings, there's bunch of space on the target disk and my last backup was successful.

This tip allows you to disable them:

They are actually automatically deleted if you need the space for other files.

Thanks for you fast reply. I just don't get it so much what's the purpose of local snapshots, if you have hourly backup to and external drive. Can you explaint this to me? I would be really interested.

It's only enabled on portables (ie laptops), where you may not have your external backup drive plugged in the whole time. It doesn't guard against drive failure, but it does guard against accidental erasure / file corruption.

Yes, this was the only thing which came to my mind as well, just than why to keep them still on my HD, if I had e.g. 5 mins ago a successful backup to the TM.
