Disable spaces

Spaces may be "intuitive" but they are deeply annoying. On my Mac, moving windows anywhere makes them jump to an invisible space, and I am forced to launch mission control to find the lost window. It is downright stupid.

How do I disable this deeply irratating behaviour?
