I have an external hard drive for movies and i do not want to take up room on my imac HD, How can i stream the movies from my external to the apple tv?
the hard drive is connected to the Imac not the airport.

Well, I have been able to successfully do this, but I use a Windows system. But basically you set up Home Sharing in Itunes, and add your movie files to the Movies category in Itunes. Then set up your Apple TV to Home Share from your computer.
